Aphids are small, soft-bodied insects that are major pests of many plants. They are sap-sucking insects that feed by inserting their mouthparts into the plant's vascular system and sucking out the fluids. This can damage the plant and stunt its growth. Aphids can also transmit diseases to plants.
Identification:
- Aphids are soft-bodied insects, typically less than 1/8 inch long.
- Their color can vary from green, yellow, brown, and black are common colors for aphids found on sesame.
- They have piercing-sucking mouthparts that they use to feed on plant sap.
Symptoms of Pest/Disease:
- Yellowing and crinkling of leaves: The yellowing is caused by the aphids sucking the sap out of the leaves, which damages the plant tissue. The crinkling is caused by the distortion of the leaves as they try to heal themselves.
- Presence of aphids on the undersides of leaves: Aphids are small, soft-bodied insects that are usually green, yellow, or brown. They cluster together on the undersides of leaves, where they feed on the plant sap.
- Sticky leaves: Aphids produce a substance called honeydew. This honeydew can coat the leaves of the sesame plant, making them sticky. Sooty mold can also grow on the honeydew, giving the leaves a black appearance.
